Interior design for a penthouse
River Crescent, Nottingham
The basic element of the concept for the proposed interiordesign of the penthouse in River Crescent is an elemental feature of its location:the river.
A river is a water route, usually of scenic and naturalbeauty, that can be linking various places of interest (or not). A similar rolein the penthouse plays the long corridor which is designed, apart from itsobvious functionality as a link between all rooms, as an element of beauty withcharming curves and corners.
To transfer the idea of the river inside the penthouse, materialsand colours were chosen that they were considered to reflect various propertiesof flowing water: metal and glass for reflection and shininess, grey shades andsilver, flowing motives and patterns, some transparencies too. In a settingthat ranges between black and white (and all the intermediate shades and tints)some colourful injections are proposed to enliven the environment. Thesecolours were inspired from different combinations of coloured river pebbles thatwere attributed to each room. In the master bedroom with its dressing room(probably also extended to the integrated bathroom) the inserted colour is red-orange,as a way to symbolize passion and also to warm up this northern space. The othertwo bedrooms which also face to the north have a similar attitude, with thesecond one featuring a warm yellow-ochre and the third one a relaxing deeperand paler olive-green. For the living area with the kitchen at the background abolder combination of purple- violet and almond –mint green was considered as agood way to make an interesting and relaxing space as this should be. Theproposed colours are inserted in the form of wall paint, fabrics or otherdecorating objects. Each room features a special wallpaper too, which is inbalance with the proposed colours.
A second element that defined the penthouse interior designis flexibility. The property is destined for renting which is an unpredictablefactor. The new tenants may be a family with small children or with teenagersor it might be a mature couple. These are all situations with differentiatedrequirements. For this reason it was intended to opt for furniture and schemesthat can be easily adapted according to the current needs. This is also a wayto make the property appealing to the greatest number of potential tenantspossible. With this perspective, in the second bedroom which appears mainly asa double bed guestroom, two separate single beds are joined together instead ofone double, so that in case of two small children the bedroom can betransformed to a twin with the nightstand in-between. Similarly, the thirdbedroom features a sofa- bed that can sleep up to 2 persons, so it can functionas a teenager room, as a guestroom or as a separate home office room. The needfor the home office function was addressed by inserting a desk to each room.
A third and final factor shaping the interior design schemewas the existent placement of outlets and switches; furniture was placed sothat it takes advantage of the supplies and simultaneously minimizing any relocationas possible.
The overall attempt was to create a relaxing, flowingenvironment that resembles a rhythmic river setting, where the inhabitants canfeel at home and unwind from everyday routine.
